Siren Songs

11/04/2025

The Grand Hall of the Sapieha Palace will become filled with Siren Songs, a three-part ambient

work by composer Ramūnas Motiekaitis. Created in 2024, the piece was partially inspired by the

exhibition Serenes et Pax by Žygimantas Augustinas. Featuring predominantly sinewave-like

timbres alongside other sounds, the work has, by the composer’s own admission, enchanted him

like a siren’s call.

“Interpretations of the siren myth are full of contradictions, but in the case of this work, these are

friendly sirens – like refreshing water that you want to dive into, like a smooth marble surface that you can’t take your hands off, like warm light that you want to spread on a piece of bread. The piano keys will be touched, too, singing along with the sirens, wishing to be seduced by them, wishing to disappear,” says the composer of the soundscape.

Motiekaitis, a composer and philosopher of culture and art, was born and raised in Vilnius. He studied composition, philosophy, and Japanese studies in Norway, Finland, and Japan. He hascomposed works in various genres, and has received the Lithuanian Composers’ Union’s Best

Work of the Year Award five times. Motiekaitis has taught at Vilnius University, Vytautas

Magnus University, and currently teaches at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre.
