Going to Nowhere – A Deep Listening Exploration of Vilnius

Going to Nowhere is a series of sound-based artistic explorations dedicated to an attentive and immersive study of Vilnius’ sonic landscape. Through deep listening walks and the creation of site-specific compositions, the project investigates the city’s aural identity and the transient nature of its soundscapes.

Spherescapes is the culmination of a five-year artistic research process. The creative team began at Vilnius’ approximate geographical center—White Bridge—independently navigating four directions of the city. With only pre-determined destinations in mind, the artists traversed vast urban territories, documenting the most striking auditory and visual impressions along the way. A crucial element of the process involved reflective discussions after each walk, gradually refining their listening skills, sharpening attention, and observing the organic evolution of sound in the city.

The title Spherescapes refers to the perimeter traced by these explorations—paths extending outward from a central point, encapsulating the sonic and visual essence of the city’s edges. This work unfolds as a four-part composition of music, video, and environmental sound. Its score, though structurally defined, embraces randomness, mirroring the fluid and ever-changing processes of the urban soundscape. A steady transformation of intensities and textures guides the listener through Vilnius as if with a defocused gaze and ear, drifting through the city’s rhythms and atmospheres.

The violin and cello parts, much like the video installation, present two perspectives on the same auditory and visual phenomena—gazing at the same place yet perceiving it differently.
