“The Sapieha Palace is a very special place where I can feel a certain juxtaposition: historical layers of Vilnius history embedded in its walls on the one hand, and a dense sense of contemporaneity on the other. That is why it is important to me that this is where the programme Between a Thousand Moons will be presented for the first time. It echoes one of the most important ideas of the album – that it is possible to blur the marks of time and that choosing an individual point of view can offer a fresh outlook on compositions” – Marta Finkelštein, curator and performer of the programme
The Between a Thousand Moons programme was conceptualised by juxtaposing musical miniatures written between 1905 and 2024. Signs of aesthetic direction and periods of creation become blurred, revealing unexpected interactions between the works.
The album highlights the contour of the canon of Lithuanian piano music, while simultaneously revealing the freedom that arises from uncertainty when each performer creates their own subjective constellation – from works learned in childhood and pieces prepared for competitions to compositions by iconic composers and scores found in archives, or simply aesthetically related creations.
The vinyl release of Between a Thousand Moons has been in development since summer 2023 and will be launched alongside a digital version in February 2025. The Music Information Centre Lithuania archive was used as a starting point when developing the idea of this album. However, its realisation was first and foremost driven by its team – Radvilė, Evelina, and Linas – who allowed the album’s concept to evolve and grow, lending their eyes and ears, and valuable professional expertise during its execution. Special thanks to Vytautas and Arūnas for their sonic ingenuity during post-production, to Ugnė for the conceptual design, and to Ilmė for the photoshoot under the full moon. The record was pressed by Green Lakes Pressing with funding from the Lithuanian Council for Culture and support from partners: the Lithuanian Composers’ Union, Organum, and MAMA Studios.
