BREAKING THE JOINTS exhibition’s opening events

On 4 April we invite you to the opening of the major exhibition at Sapieha palace! ‘Breaking the Joints’ is a group exhibition and event programme that considers the status of the body within the history of animation, elaborating on the essential concepts of cartoons, while also examining what these modes of world-building can tell us about our world today.

On Friday, admission to the exhibition and events is free.

5 April (Saturday):

1pm Flipbook workshop for teenagers with ANIMATEST

Approx. duration 2 hrs.

How does a static drawing start to move? In this workshop, you will learn the basics of animation and create your own flipbook – a small book that makes a drawing move like an animated short film!

6 April (Sunday):

11am–4pm Radio Vilnius takeover

 

1pm The Miracle of Double Vision – a thaumatrope workshop for children

Approx. duration 1–2 hrs (depending on participant engagement and level of detail in drawings)

Can a picture come to life in the blink of an eye? In this educational workshop, we will learn how an optical illusion works, and how simple drawings can become moving images! Together, we will create thaumatropes – small “wonder turners” where two different images merge into one.

Visiting the exhibition and taking part in workshops, tours and events requires a ticket.

7 April (Monday):

4pm Introductory tour of the Sapieha Palace

Approx. duration 50 min.

The tour briefly introduces the history of the Sapieha Palace, its changing use and current contemporary art exhibitions: Interviews with the Monster by Eva Kot’átkova in the North Gallery of the ground floor, and this year’s main exhibition Breaking the Joints.

Every Monday evening from 5pm, the Sapieha Palace welcomes visitors to a slow, quiet visit with reduced sensory stimuli: dimmed lights, reduced sound volume, and no events or guided tours.
